  • Bring Liquid-Cooling PCIe Gen5 E1.S Storage to the 5.25" Bay
The CP167 is an ICY DOCK concept mobile rack designed to explore next-generation liquid-cooling E1.S NVMe storage deployment for high-density enterprise and AI systems. Built for a standard 5.25" drive bay, the enclosure supports up to eight 9.5mm E1.S SSDs with removable trays, combining PCIe Gen5 performance, front-access serviceability, and low-noise thermal operation in a compact form factor.

Designed around PCIe 5.0 connectivity through four MCIO 8i interfaces, each SSD supports up to PCIe 5.0 x4 bandwidth at speeds up to 128Gbps (depending on SSD performance), making CP167 suitable for demanding storage-intensive environments.
  • Why Liquid-Cooling for E1.S SSDs?
As PCIe Gen5 SSD performance continues to increase, thermal management becomes a critical challenge in dense server and edge deployments. Traditional fan-based cooling solutions can generate higher noise levels while struggling to efficiently remove concentrated heat from tightly packed NVMe drives.
  • The CP167 concept explores an alternative approach by integrating liquid-cooling architecture into a removable E1.S SSD mobile rack platform. This design direction aims to improve cooling efficiency while supporting quieter operation, making it especially attractive for environments where thermal stability, acoustic control, and sustained PCIe Gen5 performance are equally important.

    Potential deployment scenarios include:

    • AI / ML servers requiring high-speed NVMe scratch or dataset storage
    • Edge computing platforms operating in thermally constrained environments
    • High-performance workstation or media processing systems
    • Industrial and embedded deployments prioritizing low-noise operation
    • Enterprise storage validation and next-generation EDSFF platform development
  • Removable E1.S Tray Design for Faster Maintenance
The CP167 features eight front-accessible removable E1.S SSD trays, allowing drives to be quickly installed, replaced, or serviced without opening the chassis. The tray structure is designed for simplified SSD installation while supporting hot-plug functionality for reduced maintenance downtime.

Compared to traditional internally mounted NVMe SSD deployments, the removable tray architecture helps simplify maintenance workflows for system integrators, enterprise IT teams, and storage platform developers managing frequent drive replacement cycles.
  • Enterprise-Oriented Platform Design
Built with a rugged full-metal enclosure, the CP167 is engineered for demanding enterprise and industrial environments. Front-panel LED indicators provide quick visibility of drive power and activity status, helping technicians monitor SSD operation directly from the front of the system.

The enclosure also incorporates EMI grounding considerations and high-density cabling support through MCIO 8i connectivity, aligning with modern PCIe Gen5 EDSFF platform requirements.
