What is PCIe Bifurcation?

PCIe bifurcation is the process of splitting a single physical PCIe slot into multiple lane configurations, allowing multiple devices to be connected to a single PCIe slot on the motherboard. This is typically done in the BIOS/UEFI settings of your motherboard.

How to enable PCIe bifurcation?

1. Access the BIOS/UEFI Settings:

  • Restart your computer.
  • Press the appropriate key (usually Delete, F2, F10, Esc, or a specific key indicated by your motherboard manufacturer) to enter the BIOS/UEFI setup.

Locate the PCIe Slot Configuration:

  • Navigate to the "Advanced" or "Chipset" settings tab. The exact location may vary depending on your motherboard manufacturer.
  • Look for a setting related to PCIe slot configuration, PCIe bifurcation, or similar terms. This might also be found under a submenu like "PCI Subsystem Settings."

Enable PCIe Bifurcation:

  • Select the PCIe slot you want to bifurcate.
  • Choose the bifurcation mode that suits your needs. Common bifurcation modes include:
    • x4x4x4x4: Splits a x16 slot into four x4 slots.
    • x8x8: Splits a x16 slot into two x8 slots.
  • x8x4x4: Splits a x16 slot into one x8 slot and two x4 slots.
  • Save the changes and exit the BIOS/UEFI setup. This is typically done by pressing F10 and confirming the changes.

Verify the Configuration:

  • Once your system restarts, enter the BIOS/UEFI setup again to ensure the changes have been applied correctly.

Note: Not all motherboards support PCIe bifurcation, and the options available might vary depending on the motherboard model and BIOS/UEFI version. Always refer to your motherboard's manual for specific instructions and compatibility information.
