ToughArmor MB218E5P-B

8 Bay 15mm E1.S SSD (9.5/15mm Heights) Mobile Rack for External 5.25" Drive Bay (4 x MCIO 8i SFF-TA-1016)
Product Details
  • High-Density 8-Bay E1.S NVMe Storage in a Single 5.25" Bay
The ToughArmor MB218E5P-B is a high-density E1.S (EDSFF) NVMe SSD mobile rack designed to fit a standard 5.25" drive bay while supporting up to eight E1.S SSDs in 9.5mm or 15mm heights.

Built for PCIe Gen5 storage platforms, each slot supports PCIe 5.0 x4 bandwidth with transfer speeds up to 128Gbps (depending on SSD performance)—ideal for high-throughput storage nodes that require compact serviceability without compromising performance.
  • Removable Drive Trays with Screwless E1.S SSD Installation
To streamline deployment and maintenance, MB218E5P-B features eight removable drive trays with screwless SSD installation, allowing technicians to install or replace E1.S drives quickly in routine service cycles.

For environments that involve frequent drive swaps or controlled data transport, the removable tray workflow reduces handling time and helps standardize drive management across systems - especially when the chassis layout makes direct internal access difficult.
  • Clean Cabling for Full PCIe Gen5 Bandwidth via MCIO + EPS Power
MB218E5P-B uses four MCIO 8i (SFF-TA-1016) ports with a single ATX EPS 8-pin power connector to simplify wiring in dense builds. This architecture is intended for platforms using tri-mode HBA/RAID cards, providing a clean and scalable way to route PCIe signals and power for high-speed NVMe storage integration.
  • Dual Detachable 40mm Fans for Active Cooling Performance
To address the thermal demands of PCIe Gen5 NVMe SSDs, the MB218E5P-B is equipped with dual detachable 40mm fans (40×40×20mm) to maintain airflow and support stable operation in compact, high-density environments. In addition, Active Power Technology (APT) helps reduce unnecessary wear and noise—the LEDs and fans power on only when a drive is installed.
  • Enterprise-Ready ToughArmor Construction and Reliability Features
Built with a rugged full-metal enclosure, MB218E5P-B is engineered for durability in enterprise environments. Front status LEDs provide quick at-a-glance monitoring, with green indicating power and activity.
  • Integrated grounding points help reduce EMI interference between the enclosure and chassis, supporting stable operation in signal-sensitive systems and professional deployments.

NVMe Storage Selection Tool - an interactive guide that helps you find compatible mobile racks, cables, and adapters based on your system's NVMe slot type and installation needs.

Perfect for system integrators and DIY users alike, it eliminates the guesswork from building your ideal removable NVMe storage solution.
Optional MB218TP-1B Screw-Mount Tray for High-Vibration Environments
For deployments requiring enhanced mechanical retention and long-term stability, the MB218E5P series also supports the optional MB218TP-1B screw-mount tray. Unlike the standard tool-less tray, the MB218TP-1B secures the SSD with screws and is compatible with both MB218E5P-B and MB218E5P-1B enclosures.

This tray option is particularly suited for industrial PCs, transportation systems, edge computing, and other vibration-sensitive environments where additional SSD retention is preferred to help minimize connector movement during operation. The MB218TP-1B is available as a special-order accessory. please contact sales01@icydock.com for more information.

FAQ

Q: Why does my new NVMe SSD show performance degradation or inconsistent behavior when connected through a PCIe adapter mobile rack?

A: High-speed PCIe devices, such as NVMe SSDs, require precise and stable signal integrity to operate correctly. If your NVMe SSD is connected via a PCIe adapter mobile rack that is inserted into a CPU-connected PCIe slot far from the CPU, the longer motherboard traces can increase the risk of signal degradation. This degradation can cause your NVMe SSD to experience performance drops, instability, or inconsistent behavior.

To ensure optimal performance, it is strongly recommended to install the PCIe adapter mobile rack into a PCIe slot closest to the CPU. Doing so minimizes the physical distance for signal transmission, significantly reducing the potential for signal degradation and ensuring stable, consistent performance and expected transfer speeds.

Q: The system does not detect the E1.S SSD I installed in the ICY DOCK enclosure. What should I do?

A: Since the motherboard and operating system may not support hot-swapping, if their compatibility has not been confirmed, we highly recommend powering off the device/system before inserting or removing an E1.S SSD.

If the system is still unable to detect the drive after installation, please follow the steps below to manually scan for new hardware:

Windows 11 / Windows 10 / Windows 8 – In the search box on the taskbar, type device manager, and click it from the menu. Once the device manager window pops up, right-click on the disk drive icon, and click scan for hardware changes.

Windows 7 – Right-click on the computer icon on the desktop, select properties, click device manager, right-click on the disk drive icon and then click scan for hardware changes.
